A Legacy Through Scholarship

When Margaret Cloonan, LHC '52, moved to Denver to attend Loretto Heights College, it was love at first sight-love for the city, love for learning, and love for the Sisters of Loretto. And that love lasted a lifetime.

Growing up in the small, rural community of North Park, Colorado, Margaret yearned to move to a big city and attend college. She was so motivated that she graduated from high school a year early. Her parents agreed to let her attend Loretto Heights, where they felt the school could provide the environment, faith foundation, and academics she should have.

For Margaret, life as a college student in Denver was everything she had hoped it would be, and more. She relished the opportunities to meet so many new people, explore her academic interests, and develop her Catholic faith.

After graduation, Margaret decided to make Denver her home. For almost 50 years, she worked in accounting for the courts as well as in banking, commercial real estate, and the food manufacturing industry. Throughout it all, she remained connected to Regis University.

As an active member of the Loretto Heights alumni club, she enjoyed staying in touch with her friends, classmates, and the Sisters of Loretto, as well as talking with current Regis students about their own experiences. Grateful for the lasting impact of the Sisters of Loretto and LHC for her life, Margaret encouraged students to make the most of the opportunities to improve their lives through education.

Asking that a percentage of her estate was given to Regis for scholarships, Margaret provided for a scholarship that is awarded to at least three students annually (one each in nursing, education, and business). Margaret passed away in 2014, but her love for Regis lives on through the Margaret L. Cloonan Endowed Scholarship.
